Lu Cheng asked, “For the work of holding to oneness, when reading I give my whole mind to reading; when receiving a guest, I give my whole mind to receiving the guest. Can this be called holding to oneness?”
The Master said, “When loving beauty, someone gives his whole mind to loving beauty; when loving wealth, he gives his whole mind to loving wealth. Can that be called holding to oneness? That is what is called pursuing things, not holding to oneness. Holding to oneness is to be devoted solely to the one Heaven's principle.”
