Newly Added: Smallpox and Rashes
The Six Qi govern heaven and respond through cold, heat, calamity and blessing. The Five Phases move in succession as smallpox, eruptive fevers, sores and rashes circulate.
To ask about safety or danger, rely on the hexagram of the Changes. First examine the Useful image’s strength or decline; next investigate whether the Avoided Spirit moves or remains still.
Generation, support, assistance and Combination let the pox grow from a vital root. Control, Harm, Penalty and Clash subject its blossoms to a destructive rain.
Parents moving protects Brothers, so how could it favor children and grandchildren? Brothers active brings difficulty to wives and servants, but sons and nephews welcome its presence.
Most auspicious is a still Officer and a strong Useful Spirit. Most ominous is a strong Ghost and an active Avoided Spirit.
The Useful Spirit attaining Birth promises security throughout a hundred years. The Source Spirit at Death or Extinction means harm after a month.
Officer strong makes the pox difficult to open and spread clearly. Blessing strong means its blossoms will be sparse.
Tomb or Storehouse should not occupy the Useful Spirit. How could Rest and Imprisonment suitably hold it?
Many Officers appearing in the hexagram warns of dangerous pocks. Blessing gathering in the lines warns of calamity caused by giving tonics.
Chaotic movement is altogether unfavorable. Repeating Chant is also ominous.
Descendants emerging means recovery without medicine. Parents at a crossing or heavy line means difficulty in treatment even if a physician is invited.
Wealth moving in the hexagram calls for regulating the spleen and stomach. Brothers active in the image calls for attending to the chest.
Indulging the appetite increases worry, usually because Officer is assisted and Self injured. Enjoying flavors and taking food comes from assisting Blessing and generating Body.
A Six Clashes hexagram makes eruption difficult. Lines in Six Combinations favor bringing the process to completion.
Suppressed without erupting results from the Useful Spirit being hidden and injured. Erupting without filling with fluid results from Officer in Void and further Control.
If the Source Spirit is damaged, even appearance is unfavorable. If the principal image is injured but receives rescue and protection, there is no obstruction.
Only when Blessing and Ghost meet Green Dragon is smallpox inoculation suitable. If the Useful Spirit and malefic influence meet White Tiger, postpone planting the blossoms.
Reading note: Planting blossoms is the passage’s historical expression for smallpox inoculation.
Dark Warrior Clashing with Self or Body means the text attributes an adverse change to the baleful influence of an unclean woman. White Tiger on Officer or the Useful Spirit means severe fire toxin has not cleared.
With Tiger upon Body, discuss accompanying illness through the Five Phases. With Sha among the lines, discuss lifelong implications through the Eight Trigrams.
Metal represents the lungs: increased pain and coughing is unfavorable. Fire belongs to the heart channel: sores and blotches are especially to be avoided.
Wood Ghost means wind evil has not yet expressed itself outwardly. A Water palace means cold food still lingers. Pitted skin is associated with Officer upon the Four Earths, and a broken position meeting Three Clashes.

Dark Warrior indicates yin deficiency with dark, shrunken pocks. Gouchen corresponds to distention, oppression and yellowish swelling. Soaring Snake with Wood brings shaking like childhood convulsions. Vermilion Bird with blazing Fire is true blood heat.
White Tiger together with the Avoided Spirit and Sha at crossing or heavy lines means cries of mourning will arrive. Green Dragon meeting a moving beneficent star means celebration will come.
Judge life and death through the Five Phases’ Generation and Control. Determine severity through the Six Spirits occupying the lines.
Children and grandchildren fill one’s sight, but before their pox blossoms appear, how much worry one bears! With gold and jade filling the hall, neglecting their education wastes one’s efforts.
