Question Fourteen: Must encountering the Three Penalties and Six Harms always be ominous?
Answer: In the Three Penalties, Yin–Shen–Si complete together forms Penalty; Zi and Mao together form Penalty; Chou–Wei–Xu complete together forms Penalty; Chen, Wu, You and Hai are called self-Penalties. When the Useful Spirit is in Rest and Imprisonment, controlled by another line, and also encounters the Three Penalties, calamity appears. When all Three Penalties are present but do not move, and the Useful Spirit is uninjured and receives Generation and support, I have never found them verified.
Repeated trials of the Six Harms have not been verified, so they are not recorded.

Judgment: Si Fire, the Useful Spirit, is generated by the month and combined with the day: the illness could be treated. But Yin, the Month Commander, Shen, the day, and Si together form the Three Penalties. I fear danger. He died on Yin day at Yin hour.
Judgment: Hai Water, the husband star, is the Useful Spirit. Xu Earth generates and supports, and You Metal moves to generate. But it changes into Tomb and into returning Control by the Month Commander. It is also Wu day, with Wu–You–You self-Penalties complete. The illness becomes immediately dangerous, and he died that day at Wu hour.

Judgment: Wei Earth Wealth is the Useful Spirit. Changing into a Metal Officer and Ghost is unfavorable. Si Fire, the Source Spirit, is in Cycle Void and Month Break, and also enters Tomb or Storehouse through the day. Chou–Xu–Wei Three Penalties are present. There is no auspicious sign: beware today. She died that day at Wei hour.
Judgment: Mao Wood holds Self, combines with the Month Commander and is generated by the day. There must be substantial profit this winter. He asked, “Zi day and the Zi line penalize Self: how can this be good?” I answered, “In reading a hexagram, give precedence to Self and the Useful Spirit; Generation and Control matter most. Here Penalty contains Generation: intent on Generation, one forgets Penalty.” He made a great profit that winter.
Reading note: The supplied 子尊 is read as 子日, Zi day, and 貪生忌刑 through the parallel 貪生忘刑, Generation taking precedence over Penalty.
