On Minor Fortune Periods

Major fortune governs good and ill over ten years; minor fortune governs calamity and auspiciousness for one year, named to supplement what major fortune lacks. The ancients fixed a man's start at Bingyin moving forward and a woman's at Renshen moving backward, unchangeable. Explanations say a man's yang Fire begins its original energy at Wuzi, reaches thirty at Dingsi in the printed wording, and in ten months reaches Bingyin, Wood generating Fire. A woman's yin Water begins at Gengzi, reaches twenty at Xinsi, and in ten months reaches Renshen, Metal generating Water. Such are the numbers.
Zui-Xingzi holds that men's and women's minor fortunes all proceed from the birth hour, with forward and reverse also determined by year. A yang chart in a yang year, born at Jiazi hour, immediately proceeds to Yichou at birth, then Bingyin at age two, one position yearly, cycling again. A yin chart in a yang year proceeds backward likewise. He says trials repeatedly verified it. Still compare good and ill with major fortune, the pillars' Useful Spirit, and the day ruler. Before a child's major fortune begins, use this method especially. Death, Extinction, or Flourishing Killings necessarily bring danger. First detail the eight characters' Decline, Flourishing, preferences, and taboos, then compare this method, and the text claims it never fails.
Those discussing charts today use only major fortune, not realizing minor fortune also has crucial points. An auspicious major period with obstructed minor fortune must not immediately be called favorable. A harmful major period with auspicious minor fortune must not immediately be judged harmful. Minor fortune is also called the moving year and must be investigated.
Translator's note: Both the fixed Bingyin/Renshen method and Zui-Xingzi's birth-hour method are retained, including their differing direction rules. The thirty, twenty, ten-month, and age-two statements are not recalculated. Claims of repeated verification and never failing belong to the supplied author.
