On Clashes and Impacts

The branches take the seventh position as a clash, like the stems taking the seventh as Killing. Zi and Wu oppose: Zi to Wu counts seven. Jia meeting Geng is Killing: Jia to Geng counts seven. Six combines; seven passes beyond, so mutual clash and impact become Killing. Clashes are the twelve branches' spirits of combat and attack, generally harmful. Yet some give exceptional blessings through generation at the clash, such as Xinsi Metal seeing Guihai Water, indicating far-spreading reputation, outstanding brilliance, and prominent examination success. Conquest at the clash, such as Renshen Metal seeing Gengyin Wood, indicates an alert spirit, handsome appearance, refined bearing beyond the ordinary, lofty freedom, and walking with face raised. At Birth or Flourishing the spirit is firm, appearance solemn, courage strong, and conduct bold, with many successes and failures. At Death or Extinction the person is poor and mean, appearance perverse, actions attracting harm and disgrace, often with early death. The four Storehouses Xu, Chou, Chen, and Wei contain the ten stems' Wealth, Office, Seal, and other things, especially welcoming clashing activation. Metal at Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai or at Zi, Wu, Mao, and You instead forms a great configuration and is not judged as clash and impact. Same-kind clashes, such as Jiazi seeing Jiawu or Jimao seeing Jiyou, often ruin ancestral property and leave the mind restless throughout life, though firm, bright, and decisive. Even high Emolument and weighty reputation eventually suffer a loss.
Meeting a seventh-position Killing gives an activating clash in an auspicious chart and calamity in a harmful one. Another position clashing with gathered calamity is Breaking Calamity into Blessing; clashing with gathered blessing breaks it into calamity. Another position clashing with an infringed Void also breaks calamity into blessing. Such a condition in year, month, day, or hour certainly makes a person supported by emoluments. Month clashing with day or hour, or hour with year, is called Enmity: no kindness toward others, much dislike received, prolonged illness or sudden death. Robbery Killing and Death Spirit clashing indicate penal trouble. At Death or Extinction there is much illness. Noble Killings entering a configuration with refined energy and examination reputation often lead to censorial or remonstrance office, yet end in death from severe disease, according to the text. Original Influence and Void clashing give poverty if not low status.
Shen Zhi says: “Breaking Seal, Wealth, and Emolument, or breaking Horse, seldom gives me blessings. Further breaking combination with day and hour clashing gives illness in hands and feet or head and eyes.” Breaking Seal is a Wood person carrying Guiwei with Yichou Metal present. Breaking Wealth is a Metal person taking Yin and Mao as Wealth and seeing Shen or You. Breaking Emolument is Jia's Emolument at Yin seeing Shen. Breaking Horse is Horse at Si seeing Hai. Breaking Combination is a stem combination disrupted by a branch: a Jiawu person sees Jihai, then Si breaks Jihai, or Zi breaks the Jiawu combination. A poem says: “A clash may yet generate itself; gathered at the Imperial Seat, the position lacks punishment. Further Canopy of Splendor and Authority Killing give an upright, prominent official commanding mighty troops.”
Thus clashes and disruption can be auspicious or harmful and must not be judged uniformly.
Translator's note: All positive, negative, and mixed clash conditions and the five distinct breaking examples are retained, including the Metal groups and the source's favorable final poem. Its illness, death, personality, and career predictions are historical claims; the closing warning against blanket judgment is translated in full.
