On the Emoluments of the Ten Stems
Emolument means rank and stipend, enjoyed when one obtains power. From the first division of ten stems and twelve branches, Jia and Yi were paired with Yin and Mao in the east; Bing and Ding with Si and Wu in the south; Geng and Xin with Shen and You in the printed You direction; Ren and Gui with Hai and Zi in the north. The stems take branch spirits as Emolument, which follows Flourishing: Jia at Yin, Yi Mao, Geng Shen, Xin You, Ren Hai, Gui Zi, Bing Si, Ding Wu; Wu lodges at Si and Ji at Wu, with variant spellings. Si and Wu are Flourishing Fire, the child obtaining Emolument through its mother. Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei remain: Chen and Xu are Kuigang, called malign border ground, where Emolument Origin does not lodge. Chou and Wei are Tianyi Noble Person's gates of entry and exit, avoided by Emolument Origin. Thus these four palaces have no Emolument. Another account says the four seasonal positions contain mixed energy, not exclusive enough for Emolument, and so are not taken.
Jia's Emolument is Yin. Jia seeing Bingyin has Jia Earth conquering Bing Water as Wealth, as printed, giving Blessing-Star Emolument. Wuyin gives Fire and Earth generating, Hidden-Horse Emolument, both auspicious. Gengyin is Broken Emolument, half auspicious and half harmful. Renyin is Direct Emolument with Road-Cutting Void, necessarily Buddhist or Daoist clergy. Jiayin is Long-Life Emolument, greatly auspicious.
Yi's Emolument is Mao. Yimao is Joy-Spirit Flourishing Emolument, auspicious. Dingmao is Road-Cutting Void, harmful. Jimao is Advancing-Spirit Emolument. Xinmao is Broken Emolument and Crossing Spirit, half auspicious and half harmful. Guimao carries Taiyi and is Dead Emolument: even with rank, poverty at the end.
Bing's Emolument is Si. Jisi is Nine-Heavens Storehouse Emolument, auspicious. Xinsi is Road-Cutting Void. Guisi is Hidden-Noble-Spirit Emolument, half auspicious and half harmful. Yisi is Flourishing-Horse Emolument and Dingsi Storehouse Emolument, both auspicious.
Ding's Emolument is Wu. Gengwu is Road-Cutting Void, harmful. Renwu is Virtue-Combination Emolument and Jiawu Advancing-Spirit Emolument, both harmful as supplied. Bingwu is Joy-Spirit Emolument crossing Sheep Blade, half auspicious. Wuwu is Hidden-Sheep-Blade Emolument, mostly harmful.
Wu's Emolument is Si. Jisi is Nine-Heavens Storehouse Emolument. The text then has a stray Ren and auspicious phrase, followed by an unnamed Road-Cutting Void. Guisi is Noble-Spirit Emolument, Wu and Gui combining and transforming, with weighty office. Yisi is Post Horse Sharing the Region Emolument; Dingsi Flourishing-Storehouse Emolument, both auspicious.
Ji's Emolument is Wu. Gengwu is Road-Cutting Void and Renwu Dead-Hostile-Agent Emolument, both harmful. Jiawu is Advancing-Spirit Combined Emolument, an image of prominence. Bingwu is Joy-Spirit Emolument. Wuwu is Hidden-Spirit Sheep-Blade Emolument, harmful.
Geng's Emolument is Shen. Renshen is Great-Defeat Emolument. An unnamed Road-Cutting-Void Emolument follows; both are harmful. Bingshen is Great-Defeat Emolument, with many successes and failures. Wushen is Hidden-Horse Emolument, much obstruction, but Noble and auspicious with Blessing Star. Gengshen is Long-Life Emolument, greatly auspicious.
Xin's Emolument is You. Guiyou is Hidden-Spirit Emolument, Water and Fire infringing one another, harmful. Yiyou is Broken Emolument, success and failure. Dingyou is Void Noble-Spirit Emolument: Ding Wood receives energy and Xin Water Bathing, indicating illicit sexual affairs; Joy Spirit makes it auspicious. Jiyou is Advancing-Spirit Emolument; Xinyou Direct Emolument, both auspicious.
Ren's Emolument is Hai. Dinghai is Noble-Spirit Combined Emolument; Yihai Heavenly-Virtue Emolument; Jihai Flourishing Emolument; Xinhai Horse Sharing the Region Emolument, all greatly auspicious. Guihai alone is Great-Defeat Emolument, poverty and scant resources.
Gui's Emolument is Zi. Jiazi is Advancing-Spirit Emolument, indicating examination success and advancement. Bingzi is Crossing-Sheep-Blade Emolument with Blessing Star, noble with authority. Wuzi is Hidden-Sheep-Blade Combining Nobility Emolument, half auspicious. Gengzi is Seal Emolument, auspicious. Renzi is Direct-Sheep-Blade Emolument, harmful.
There is Generated-and-Completed Emolument, as Jia and Yi people obtaining Jiayin and Yimao.
There is Reputation-and-Position Emolument, as a Jia person seeing Bingyin.
There is True Emolument, as a Jia person seeing Bing or Ji, and Yi person seeing Ji or Wu, in the supplied list; all form noble configurations.
There is Advancing and Retreating True Emolument: Wuchen seeing Dingsi, Wuwu seeing Dingsi, Bingchen seeing Guisi, Bingwu seeing Guisi, Guihai seeing Jiazi, Guichou seeing Jiazi, Renxu seeing Guihai, and Renzi seeing Guihai. Advancing is easy, retreating difficult. Further blessing spirits allow a noble chart; repetition is feared.
There is Emolument Meeting Assembly and Combination, as Jia's Emolument Yin obtaining Gengxu.
There is Food Spirit Carrying Emolument: Ren takes Jia as Food and obtains Jiayin; Gui takes Yi and obtains Yimao; Wu takes Geng and obtains Gengshen; Ji takes Xin and obtains Xinyou, indicating good fortune.
There is Food Spirit Combining Emolument: Jia takes Bing as Food and obtains Bingshen or Bingyin; Yi takes Ding and obtains Dingwei or Dingmao; Geng takes Ren and obtains Renchen or Renzi; Xin takes Gui and obtains Guisi or Guichou. These eight positions are auspicious.
There is Wealth atop Emolument, the Ornamented Killing: Jia seeing Wuyin and Yi seeing Yimao, for example, indicating wealth and reputation.
There is a Hostile Agent atop Emolument, Red-Mouth Killing: Jia seeing Gengyin or Yi seeing Xinmao, indicating verbal disputes and penal reprimand.
There is Emolument within the Ten-Day Cycle, as Jiashen seeing Gengyin or Wuwu seeing Dingsi, indicating important posts of refined distinction.
There is Heavenly-Emolument Noble Spirit. Ding's Emolument is at Wu; calculating to Wu obtains Bing. Bing's Noble Persons are at You and Hai; obtaining Xinyou and Xinhai makes Xin noble, again seeing Wu. Entering a configuration gives highest rank.
There is Stem-and-Branch Combined Emolument: Jia's Emolument Yin obtaining Jiayin and Jihai, or Yi's Emolument Mao obtaining Yimao and Gengxu, indicating exalted and weighty office.
There is Exchange of Noble Person and Emolument, as Gengyin seeing a Jiashen day or hour.
There is Emolument Attending the Origin, as a Yin person seeing Jia in day or hour. Attending in conception is especially noble.
There is Attending the Origin with Flanking Combination: Guisi seeing Wuchen and Wuwu. Two Wu combine with Gui and flank Si, Wu's Emolument, indicating enfeoffment.
There is Emolument Entering the Emolument Hall. The Song for Ordering Ignorance says: “Emolument entering its hall requires great appointment.” Li Xuzhong takes a Jia person obtaining Jiaxu: Jia is year stem, and calculating from its own position to Xu gives Emolument Hall. Xin and Ren have two positions: Xin has Xinmao and Xinchou; Ren has Renyin and Renzi. Without five-phase conquest and with positions assisting, blessings develop greatly.
Ancients say two positions before Emolument turn away and two after face toward it. Shen Zhi takes Established, Facing, Near, and Combining as noble: Established is inferior to Facing, Near inferior to Combining, and obtaining two of the four gives rank. For Jia's Emolument Yin, Yin is Established, Chou Facing, Mao Near, and Hai Combining; use this elsewhere. The source then says the others are each one position. Three harmonies and six combinations fear punishment or hostile agents. For Jiaxu, a hostile agent at Chou is feared because Chou punishes Xu; at Wei it is not feared because Xu punishes Wei. For Yiyou, a hostile agent at Si harms through three-harmony assembly; at Chen it reduces blessings through closeness of six-combination pairing.
Established Emolument indicates thick flesh and substantial energy, an unrefined physique, lifelong ease and sufficient wealth, favoring Birth and Flourishing. At Death and Extinction, energy is turbid, spirit slow, and one works constantly for a living, miserly and base. With Original Influence, money is gained through chupu gambling and lost the same way. With Official Tally, money comes through official offices or much litigation. With Robbery Killing, base crafts, petty trade, and unjust unexpected wealth. With Heavenly Center, repeated losses and ruined wealth. With Emolument's Hostile Agent and Reversed Food, money comes through credit and brokerage; even to death the mind opens to nothing else, thinking only of wealth. Another account says Storehouse gathers Emolument: Jia and Yi at Wei, Bing and Ding at Xu, Wu, Ji, Ren, and Gui at Chen, Geng and Xin at Chou. Jia and Yi with much Hai obtaining Wei are people of substantial Emolument and abundance. Combination extends Emolument laterally: Jia's Emolument Yin obtaining Hai is Manifest Combination; without Yin, obtaining Hai is Hidden Combination. Though Emolument is not seen, it is still called seen, often indicating unexpected blessings. Supporting honors Emolument. Jia's Emolument at Yin, without Yin but with Chou and Mao on both sides, is Empty Support. A Shen person seeing Yin and also Chou and Mao supporting both sides has Real Support. Yet Real Support is inferior to Empty Support, indicating great wealth and rank. Emolument in a chart may be auspicious or harmful, noble or low; one must not rely on it entirely as auspicious.
Subtle Meaning of Tianyi says: “Do you not see that Emolument, Horse, and Noble Person provide no certain reliance? Examine the five phases' harms. Weak Heavenly Origin is not yet calamity; firm earthly energy gives ample joy.” The Song of the Source Marrow says: “Emolument and Horse have many accounts: own Decline, own Death, Defeat, and Extinction. Without auspicious Killings assisting, ancestral ruin and much instability are certain.” Thus discuss five phases first, then Emolument and Horse. Five phases want Birth and Flourishing; Emolument and Horse fear Decline and Extinction. Sima Jizhu says: “Much Emolument and little Horse tire the ruling spirit; little Emolument and much Horse give ability to manage and carry burdens well.”
Translator's note: All ten stem-specific Emolument lists and every subsequent named variety are retained. The malformed Wu list and unnamed Geng-list Void entry are not reconstructed. Jia Earth/Bing Water, Ding Wood/Xin Water, both harmful Renwu/Jiawu judgments, the True Emolument list, and two-versus-one-position wording remain as supplied. Real Support being inferior to Empty Support also remains, despite the different maxim in the earlier combinations section. Physical, character, financial, and occupational outcomes are historical claims.
On the Golden Carriage
Carriage means a vehicle; golden signifies nobility. A gentleman in office receiving Emolument requires a carriage to carry him. Thus Golden Carriage always lies two positions ahead of Emolument: a Jiazi person's Emolument is at Yin and Golden Carriage at Chen. This Killing is the banner of Emolument and Life and the commander's staff and axe of the Three Powers. It indicates a gentle nature, sincere appearance, and warm, restrained conduct. A woman meeting it has rank if not wealth; a man has many wives and concubines, with hidden blessings supporting him. Birth day and hour are favorable places to meet it, giving lifelong peace among kin, worthy wives or concubines, and flourishing descendants. Imperial clansmen often carry it. In an ordinary configuration, born where the self has no energy, it indicates marrying into another household. The Zixu Configuration says: “Two positions before Emolument are Golden Carriage. Those meeting it have exceptional blessings, especially intelligence and much wealth and rank, with lifelong peace and no concern.”
Translator's note: The Jiazi–Yin–Chen example, two-position rule, and differing historical male/female outcomes follow the supplied text. The image is an astrological influence, not a prediction endorsed by the translation.
On the Post Horse
The Post Horse derives from prior-heaven three-harmony numbers. Yin is seven, Wu nine, and Xu five, totaling twenty-one. Counting forward from Zi to Shen over twenty-one positions gives the Fire configuration's Post Horse. Hai, Mao, and Wei have four, six, and eight, totaling eighteen. Counting forward from Zi to Si over eighteen gives the Wood configuration's Post Horse. Wood and Fire are yang configurations and move forward from Zi's one yang. Metal and Water are yin and move backward from Wu's one yin. The printed Jia–Zi–Chen numbers are seven, nine, and five, totaling twenty-one. Counting backward from Wu to Yin gives Water's Post Horse. Si, You, and Chou have four, six, and eight, totaling eighteen; counting from Wu to Hai over eighteen gives Metal's Post Horse. This is the method's foundation.
Yin–Wu–Xu births have Horse at Shen, ridden by five yang stems. Jiashen is Road-Cutting Void-Day Horse; Bingshen Great-Defeat Horse; Wushen Blessing-Star Hidden Horse; Gengshen Horse Meeting Heaven's Barrier; Renshen Great-Defeat Horse. These respond in Si, You, Chou, and Shen years, months, days, and hours.
Shen–Zi–Chen people have Horse at Yin, ridden by five yang stems. Jiayin is Direct-Emolument Literary-Star Horse; Bingyin Blessing-Star Horse; Wuyin Hidden Horse; Gengyin Broken-Emolument Horse; Renyin Road-Cutting Horse. These respond in Hai, Mao, Wei, and Yin years, months, days, and hours.
Si–You–Chou people have Horse at Hai, ridden by five yin stems. Yihai is Heavenly-Virtue Horse. The branch within Horse generates the stem, submerging it without achievement and leaving intelligence alone. Dinghai is Tianyi Horse; Jihai Flourishing-Emolument Horse; Xinhai Direct-Emolument Horse; Guihai Great-Defeat Horse. These respond in Shen, Zi, Chen, and Hai years, months, days, and hours.
Hai–Mao–Wei people have Horse at Si, ridden by five yin stems. Yisi is Direct-Emolument Horse; the printed Ding-Ji Flourishing-Energy Horse; the printed Ji-Yi Nine-Heavens Emolument-Storehouse Horse; Xinsi Road-Cutting Horse; Guisi Tianyi Hidden Horse. These respond in Yin, Wu, Xu, and Si years, months, days, and hours.
Horse in the pillars, without Void, disruption, defeat, Crossing, Retreating, and Hidden Spirits, must bring honor and rank. Exchanged Emolument and Tianyi Noble Spirit sharing Horse's position, with other Killings further joining, give great official power and rank in the halls of court. Hour gives superior rank, day middle rank, month ordinary standing. Storehouse Horse gives joy in youth; Flourishing Horse assists prime-age honor; Birth Horse fulfills wishes only in old age, with low office and distant appointments. For Wood, Birth is Hai, Flourishing Mao, and Storehouse Wei; follow this elsewhere. The supplied Luozi says: “Birth Horse need not have Horse; turning away from Emolument need not lack Emolument. Inspect Flourishing and Storehouse, without asking of turned-away or Birth.” The subtlety lies in assessing fullness and emptiness.
Another account calls Post Horse a spirit of operation, joy, and celebration within the Three Destinies. A gentleman meeting it often holds an honored position; an ordinary person has abundance. Major and minor fortune and the moving year reaching it indicate obtaining office or joyful changes. Minor fortune and moving year combining with Post Horse indicate promotion and Emolument. For example, Jiazi's Horse is Yin; minor fortune and Grand Duke at Hai combine with Yin.
There are twelve Horses. First, Slow-Stepping: Si–You–Chou people obtaining the printed Renhai, Hai–Mao–Wei obtaining Bingsi, Shen–Zi–Chen obtaining Jiayin, and Yin–Wu–Xu obtaining Wushen. Second, Stumbling Hoof: the four pillars carry Post Horse, but birth day has Void. Third, Broken Leg: conception month carries Post Horse while day and hour have Bathing. Shen–Zi–Chen complete seeing Yin Horse is three people riding one Horse, called Broken Leg. Hai–Mao–Wei complete seeing Horse eventually become lowly even with office and rank. With one position seated, youth may be peaceful but poverty returns. Fourth, Without Feed: birth day meets Horse and Horse feeds on the Grand Duke, as a Jiazi person obtaining Renyin day with hour further in Void. Fifth, Remaining in the Hall and Stable: conception month carries Horse without Nobility or Emolument Hall, or enters Void. Sixth, Neighing in the Wind. Seventh, Hurrying Along the Road: Post Horse has Emolument but is in Void. Eighth, Carrying a Corpse, the worst of the twelve: seeing Emolument is a corpse. In the Jiazi cycle, Si–You–Chou births have Horse at Hai: Yichou with Dinghai, Jisi with Yihai, and Guiyou with Guihai. Yichou obtaining Hai Horse fears Yin in month, day, or hour; Jisi fears Shen; Guiyou also fears Yin. One occurrence is Carrying a Corpse. Likewise, Hai–Mao–Wei belong to the Jiawu cycle: Yiwei with Xinsi, Jihai with Jisi, and Guimao with Dingsi. Yiwei obtaining Si Horse fears Yin in month, day, or hour; Jihai fears Shen; Guimao also fears Yin. All are Carrying a Corpse; apply this to other cycles. Ninth, Eating Fodder: Post Horse conquers the hour, as a Metal Horse with Wood in the birth hour. Tenth, Riding a High Carriage: conception month and birth day carry Emolument and Horse, as a Jiashen person obtaining Gengyin/Jiayin at the hour and a Gengyin conception month in the compressed example. Eleventh, Riding a Light Carriage: heaven and earth combine and see the Grand Duke, while birth month, day, and hour see Noble Person and Post Horse. A Dinghai birth in the fourth month on Renyin day at Jiyou hour has Horse in the month and Noble Person at You. Twelfth, Without Reins: Noble Spirit is in Void and Emolument in Extinction.
Assess these twelve Horses by their meaning and calamity or blessing appears. Slow-Stepping gives lifelong difficulty and only a selected candidate's status. Without Feed gives no heavenly stipend. Remaining in Stable gives no service at appointments. Broken Leg means permanent loss, Stumbling Hoof recovery, Without Reins lifelong solitude and poverty. Eating Fodder gives office up to the sixth grade; Neighing in the Wind only an empty reputation; Hurrying Along the Road vain toil for Emolument. Riding a Light Carriage gives an official post; Riding a High Carriage the Three Dukes; Carrying a Corpse means death upon obtaining office.
There is Stem-and-Branch Combined Horse. Shen–Zi–Chen's four Horses are at Yin, as printed: Jiayin seeing Jihai combines, and Bingyin seeing Xinhai combines, indicating exalted and weighty office.
There is Horse's Head Bearing a Sword: Geng or Xin atop Post Horse, or Metal seen in Nayin, gives reputation resounding on the frontier.
There is Horse Galloping to Heaven's Court. A Wood person obtains Hai and sees Xinhai, while the stem atop Horse also meets Emolument. For example, a birth in any Ren year occupying Yin, Wu, or Xu derives Wuwu from Jia. Wu's Emolument is Si, Heaven's Court; seeing Si again and obtaining You combining is the case, indicating highest official rank. Two positions behind Horse give Nine-Earth Horse, an office near the royal court.
There is Heavenly-Horse Noble Spirit: the year has no Post Station seen. Derive to Horse by the Five Tigers, inspect its stem and where that stem sees Tianyi. The stem seated at Tianyi then again sees Nobility at Horse. Rank is not below the third grade.
There is One Wood Tethering Two Horses. Yin–Wu–Xu repeatedly see Bingshen, Shen–Zi–Chen Gengyin, Si–You–Chou Jihai, and Hai–Mao–Wei Guisi. Horse's stem conquers its branch, indicating much alarm and danger. Four Horses gathered in hour or year indicate enfeoffment.
A person born under Post Horse is certainly noble if month, day, and hour stems and branches have Rein and Whip complete and also conquer the self. One position ahead of Horse is Rein, one behind Whip. A Jiazi Metal fate born in the first month on Xinchou day at Mao hour has Zi's Horse at Yin meeting Emolument. Natal Zi and birth-day Chou are behind Horse as Whip; Mao hour is ahead as Rein. Horse is Bingyin, and Fire conquers Jiazi Metal, hence rank.
Having both Post Station and Horse indicates rank up to marquis. Stem is Horse, branch Post Station. A Wuxu person's Horse at Shen obtaining Gengshen has both stem and branch Metal, Assuming Office at Shen. Wuxu's stem and branch are Earth, with Long Life at Shen. Natal chart and Post Horse's stems and branches, with the turned-away-Horse phrase, have energy: both Post Station and Horse. A Renwu person's Horse is Wushen. Wu Earth and natal Ren Water both have Long Life at Shen, while Wu Fire reaches Decline. Natal stem is Flourishing and branch Declining: Horse without Post Station. A Dingchou person's Horse is Xinhai. Metal at Hai is Illness, natal Ding Fire Extinction, and Chou Earth Assuming Office. Natal stem declines and branch flourishes, while Horse's stem also declines: Post Station without Horse. Another view takes Yin–Wu–Xu seeing Geng without Shen or Shen without Geng as these two cases; both interpretations work.
There is Horse Conquering the Self: Horse's position can restrain the birth month. Yin–Wu–Xu have Horse at Shen; Shen Metal can restrain Yin and Mao month's Wood. The source then gives a Jiazi person born in Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei months. It indicates easily sought office and Emolument, unobstructed service, success in youth, and upright, prominent office. An ordinary person meeting it gains modest wealth.
There is Horse's Wealth Storehouse: take the position Horse conquers entering Tomb. Horse at Shen is Metal, which conquers Wood; Wood's Storehouse is Wei. It indicates lifelong travel in all directions and widely acquired wealth.
There is Heroic Spirit Penetrating Horse: Post Horse lies beneath the true five-phase energy's Long Life, indicating an envoy holding commander's credentials and inspecting administrative regions.
There is Southern Li-Brightness Horse: Wei's Horse is Si, Chou's Hai, Chen's Yin, and Xu's Shen. Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are Earth positions, taking Birth places as Horse. Thus their people fly to Wu as Horse of the southern Li gate, favoring a clash with Wu. Flying Horse with Whip and Rein fitting a configuration indicates rank.
Post Horse has clear and turbid forms. Jiazi obtaining Bingyin has Emolument and Horse sharing a region; Bing is also Food Spirit and rides a Long-Life Horse. Dingchou obtaining Dinghai has Tianyi and Heavenly Office, riding an Assuming-Office Horse. Long-Life or Assuming-Office Horse, or Food, Emolument, and noble energy, makes one encounter equal a hundred. Illness, Extinction, or Void Horse with disruption, defeat, Crossing, Retreating, and Hidden Spirits is encountered yet not truly met. Even office is coarse and low, not a pure, important post.
Another account distinguishes Four Exclusive, Reputation-and-Position, Birth and Flourishing, Illness and Extinction, Carrying Treasure, Holding Flowers, Reversed Food, and Exchange Horses. Judge their good and bad, honor and disgrace through annual years, fortune, Whip, and Rein. Four Exclusive means Shen–Zi–Chen's Horse Yin meeting Jiayin, Shen meeting Gengshen, Si Dingsi, and Hai Guihai. Reputation-and-Position is Food Spirit in Horse, as Jia seeing Bing or Yi seeing Ding, obtaining Food atop Horse. Four Births are Xinsi, Jiashen, Jihai, and Bingyin Nayin at their own Birth. Four Illnesses are own Death and Extinction, as a year of Metal Nayin, Metal Extinct at Yin. Carrying Treasure is Jiazi seeing Wuyin, Horse's head bearing Heavenly Wealth; or Nayin conquering Horse as Wealth, like Food Spirit, as a Jiayin person seeing Bingshen or Jiashen seeing a Bingyin day or hour. Holding Flowers is Nayin at Assuming Office meeting Horse, as Gengshen, Renzi, and Wuchen Nayin all Wood meeting Yin, Horse's Assuming Office ground. Generated-and-Completed and Reputation-and-Position Horses follow the earlier Emolument discussion and indicate rank.
People meeting Horse favor exclusive Flourishing and dislike Void; mixedness prevents advancement. Death and Extinction are disliked, Food favored, and Wealth beneficial. Traders often favor Carrying Treasure; women most fear Holding Flowers. Treasure gives wealth; Flowers sexual misconduct. Flowers especially fears a Wood person meeting Gengyin, Yihai seeing Yisi, Dingmao seeing Dingsi, or Jiwei seeing Jisi. The text attributes sexual dissipation to men and secret affairs to women; fortune-period encounters are judged likewise.
Post Horse most fears the stem spirit's Reversed Food. Yiyou seeing Guihai has Post Horse yet receives reversed feeding: the saying Yi and Gui Do Not Belong to One Class. When Whip and Rein activate, examine exchange. A Chen person's Horse is Yin; Grand Duke at Shen clashes and stirs Yin, making Grand Duke Whip and Rein. Minor fortune at Shen likewise acts as Whip and Rein and often indicates movement. Further inspect exchange of Shen and Yin. Gengshen meeting Jiayin has Gengshen Wood Assuming Office at Yin and Jiayin Water at Long Life in Shen. Harmony is auspicious, conquest obstructive. Two-way exchange without energy is empty movement; frustrated yet energetic conditions indicate wealth. Four Horses Attending the Origin give honor and rank when favorable, ruined household and lost livelihood when unfavorable; Buddhist and Daoist clergy wander. Children and older people disadvantageously meet Horse: children from three to under twelve, with Horse clashed by minor fortune or Grand Duke, or repeatedly meeting an Assuming-Office Horse, suffer alarm, illness, and falls. Older people over fifty, with fortune or Grand Duke riding it, face depleted energy and pain in waist or legs, analogous to older people meeting Emolument and illnesses with vomiting food. Young people meeting it often fall ill: young and old cannot endure riding Horse because it is a moving, leaping five-phase spirit.
Translator's note: The complete source is retained: four birth-group lists, all twelve Horse types and outcomes, six Corpse-Horse examples and their taboo positions, every later named variant, and the final age qualifications. Jia–Zi–Chen, Renhai, Ding-Ji, Ji-Yi, four Horses, and other damaged or compressed examples remain visible rather than repaired. The Neighing-in-the-Wind type has no definition supplied at its first appearance; none is invented. Differences between naming Rein and Whip and the later examples are retained. Bodily, sexual, age, office, and death judgments are historical assertions, not modern diagnoses or reliable predictions.
General Discussion of Emolument and Horse
Emolument is the source nourishing Life and Horse the foundation supporting Body, and they most favor seeing one another. Yin–Wu–Xu have Horse at Shen; Jia's Emolument is Yin. Calculating Jia's stem to Yin gives Bing and to Shen Ren, so Bing is Heavenly Emolument and Ren Heavenly Horse. Their cross-meetings in day and hour are Heavenly Emolument and Heavenly Horse. A Jia person deriving to Xu and seeing Jiaxu has Active Emolument; a Jiazi person deriving Bingyin has Active Horse. Yin–Wu–Xu at Shen with Geng as hour stem, Hai–Mao–Wei at Si with Bing, Shen–Zi–Chen at Yin with Jia, and Si–You–Chou at Hai with Ren seek hour stem from day branch and day branch from hour stem. Obtaining them through exchange is Emolument and Horse Crossing. Jia's Emolument is Yin and Shen–Zi–Chen's Horse also Yin. Jiazi, Jiashen, or Jiachen births obtaining Bingyin hour assemble Emolument and Horse at the Imperial Seat, called Sharing One Region. Between Emolument ahead and Horse behind, an Xinsi person with a Xu day or hour and Yihai person with a Chen day or hour have Xin's Emolument at You and Horse at Hai, or Yi's Emolument at Mao and Horse at Si. Neither is seen, but both lie hidden within: Flanking Emolument and Flanking Horse. Guigu's Transmitted Writings says: “Hour dwelling in day's Emolument gains a road into azure clouds; five Horses crossing can bring one to the Yellow Pavilion.” Luoluzi says: “Turning from Emolument to chase Horse leaves one distressed on a poor road; Emolument and Horse sharing a region give the Three Platforms or Eight Seats.” The natal book attributed to Han, whose rare second name graph is not identified here, discusses Solitary and Widowed Emolument and Horse. Jiazi seeing Bingyin and Gengwu seeing Renshen share the region, yet Jiazi is one yang, Yichou two, and Bingyin three, pure yang without yin. Gengwu is one yin, Xinwei two, and Renshen three, pure yin without yang. Thus they are solitary or widowed and inauspicious despite shared Emolument and Horse. The Song for Ordering Ignorance says: “Emolument and Horse flying to heaven without punishment or conquest, born within Flourishing and Support, must attain utmost rank.”
Translator's note: All crossing, shared-region, flanking, and solitary examples are retained, as is the five-Horses wording in the quotation. The rare second graph of Han's name is not silently replaced with another author. The closing requirements and the exception to apparently auspicious shared Emolument and Horse are translated in full.
