General Account of Family Relations
The six relations are father, mother, siblings, wife-Wealth, children and grandchildren.
Take the day stem as master. Direct Resource is the birth mother; Indirect Resource is a secondary mother and paternal grandfather. Indirect Wealth is the father, being the mother's husband star, and also a secondary wife. Direct Wealth is the principal wife; Indirect Wealth is a concubine and the father. Peer means brothers and sisters. Seven Killings is a son; Direct Officer a daughter. Food Spirit is a grandson; Hurting Officer a granddaughter and grandmother.
A woman's family relations differ from a man's: Officer is the husband, Seven Killings a secondary husband, Food Spirit a son and Hurting Officer a daughter.
The classic says: 'Men take what restrains the stem as heirs; women take what the stem generates as children and servants.'
The year is ancestors; the month parents, paternal uncles, siblings and the household; the day wife, concubines and self.
How are relations harmed? Resource meeting Wealth harms mother and grandmother. Peer, Robber and Yang Blade harm wife, concubines and father. Many Officers and Killings make siblings difficult; much Hurting Officer and Food Spirit make children difficult. Owl Resource injures grandchildren and harms grandmother.
For example, Direct Resource combining signifies an improper mother; Wealth combining an improper wife; Officer combining an improper daughter; Indirect Wealth combining an improper concubine; Peer combining improper sisters; Hurting Officer combining an improper grandmother; Food Spirit combining an improper granddaughter. The moral judgments are those of the source.
For a Jia day, Gui is mother, and Wu, Chen and Xu are father and concubine. Ji, Chou, Wei and Wu compete with Wu and injure Gui Water, explaining harm to mother. Jia and Yin harm father and concubine; Geng and Shen harm elder siblings; Yi and Mao younger siblings; Bing and Si children. Infer the rest similarly. Whichever character appears in years or cycles indicates which person is harmed. Further weigh clash, restraint, decline, flourishing, favorable and contrary orientation: approaching factors advance, those whose work is complete retreat. Solitary Spirit, Widow Lodge and Void within the ten-day period are disliked; the compact text adds that two or three instead become favorable.
Voided Metal rings, voided Fire erupts and voided Water flows: these three are highly favorable. Voided Wood rots and voided Earth collapses: these two signify harm. Begin from the birth year; the text calls restraint and harm certain.
Quick Song of Family Relations:
Sharing Emolument must injure the provider;
repeated Peers damage the honored parent.
Direct Wealth harms mother; Indirect Wealth is father;
husband and wife punishing each other meet the Receding Influence.
Food Spirit gives longevity and a wife with many children;
Indirect Officer gives many daughters and few excellent sons.
Flourishing Hurting Officer must cut off heirs;
balanced Resource naturally brings glory to self.
The Father
Indirect Wealth is father, being Resource Seal's Officer star.
For Jia using Wu as father, another Jia or Yin, a complete Wood frame, or Death, Extinction, clash and punishment signifies harm to father. Otherwise it signifies separation, discord, illness or disabling injury. Rescue by Geng or Shen may prevent great harm.
Flourishing Jia with declining Wu also signifies illness and little paternal support.
Wu reaching Birth, Flourishing, Nobleman, Heavenly Virtue or Lunar Virtue also signifies distinction. Further generation and support from Bing and Ding give endless enjoyment of the father's fortune.
Killings territory means the father dies away from home.
Decline, defeat, control, Tomb or Extinction makes the father ordinary and unable to provide support.
The Mother
Direct Resource generates self.
For Jia using Gui as mother, Ji, Chou and Wei signify harm to mother. Many such factors mean the mother marries two husbands.
One Wu losing its ground or being restrained means the mother harms a former husband.
Wu receiving generation, or Resource in Peach Blossom and Bathing, means the mother has an outside attachment.
Resource in Long Life means a kind, virtuous and long-lived mother, with greater harmony between mother and child.
Yang Blade or Killings territory, or Extinction, Tomb, Solitary and Widow influences, means an unworthy mother, disability or discord.
Infer according to the principles; the author claims no failure.
Brothers and Sisters
Peer means siblings.
For Jia, another Jia is an elder brother and Yi younger siblings; Yin and Mao follow the same rule.
Geng restrains the elder brother; Xin injures the younger.
Flourishing Jia Wood makes elder siblings contend for Wealth. Many Jia, Yi, Yin and Mao make siblings seize Wealth, disagree, fight and dispute.
Ji combining with Jia signifies improper elder siblings.
Geng signifies improper younger siblings.
With many Killings and Yi Wood obtaining a frame, Killings combines with Yi and injures Jia. The elder brother's fortune is inferior to the younger's, and he depends on the younger's assistance.
Jia Wood in a Yin month, with Yi Wood controlled, means a flourishing elder and declining younger brother.
Other harmony or discord is inferred from Rest, Flourishing, Death and Extinction within the Eight Characters; the author claims universal verification.
Wife and Concubines
Direct Wealth is the principal wife; Indirect Wealth is a concubine.
Jia Wood sees Ji Earth as Direct Wealth and Wu Earth as Indirect Wealth.
An added Yi Wood frame of Hai-Mao-Wei injures the wife.
Jia and Yin restrain the wife and also signify improper conduct.
Wealth in Decline, Defeat, Tomb or Extinction means an ill or unworthy wife, otherwise an older remarried wife.
Gui signifies an improper concubine.
Ji Earth, Chou and Wei signify personal ease.
Peer dividing and seizing Wealth, or Wealth in Bathing and Peach Blossom, signifies affairs involving wife or concubines.
Wealth and Officer seated beneath day or month give much assistance from the wife and also her property.
Indirect Wealth obtaining position makes the concubine surpass the wife.
Flourishing principal Wealth makes the wife refuse a concubine.
Repeated Officer and Killings make the wife's capability in handling affairs something to fear. Gan-gu is rendered here in its sense of capability in affairs; the compressed source clause does not explain the feared outcome.
Beautiful Wealth and Officer together make a man fear his wife; Killings is especially disliked.
Much Wealth and weak self make the wife surpass the husband.
Wealth in the chart possessing qi gives harmony with wife and concubines and assistance from the wife.
Void beneath the day makes wife and concubines difficult.
Also examine Solitary Phoenix days and Yang Error and Yin Error: these signify harm to wife, marriage through relatives, a poor or cold household marriage, marrying into the wife's home or replacing a deceased wife. In a woman's chart, they signify decline of the parental household or litigation. Infer other cases by these examples.
Children
Seven Killings signifies a son.
For Jia, Geng and Shen are sons, Xin and You daughters. Bing Fire, Wu or Yin, or Killings reaching Yang Blade and a Killings palace, signifies harm to sons, otherwise illness or unworthiness. Wu and Ji Earth obtaining the season give capable, harmonious sons. Bing and Si signify improper daughters. Bathing, Peach Blossom and hidden combination, with much Food Spirit, signify an affair involving the daughter. Killings in Long Life, Lunar Virtue, Heavenly Virtue, Nobleman, Emolument, Horse, Food Spirit or Wealth territory signify a strong father and distinguished son, but balanced qi is required.
A yang day and yang hour repeat sons. A yang day and yin hour give a son first, then daughters. A yin day and yin hour repeat daughters. A yin day and yang hour give a daughter first, then sons.
Hurting Officer meeting Officer makes descendants fierce and unruly.
Hurting Officer and Void in the hour make children difficult.
For a woman's chart this passage takes Hurting Officer as a son and Food Spirit as a daughter; Resource Seal and Owl make a child difficult to obtain. This reverses the Food Spirit/Hurting Officer assignments in the general family-relations chapter; both supplied statements are retained.
A man's Officer and Killings obtaining suitable ground and balanced qi indicate children. Judge numbers through generation and completion numbers: double them for Birth and Flourishing, halve them for Death and Extinction. Do not apply this reckoning to excess or insufficiency. Excess gives children but many die early or become unruly; insufficiency gives few births and little rearing.
Officer and Killings with suitable ground, support and many favorable luminaries give loyal, filial, worthy and intelligent children. Rest, Imprisonment, Death, Extinction, Break, Defeat, Decline, Illness, Hooking and Entangling, Original Harm and Empty territory give unworthy, poor, lowly or sick children. Solitary Spirit and Widow Lodge add loneliness and distress.
For example, on a Jiazi day in a Jiazi hour, Geng dies at Zi: in Death one reaches old age without a son. In Tomb it is difficult to preserve a pair. In receiving qi at Extinction there is one son. In Womb, the first is a daughter: a girl is present, as the line says. In Nurture, three sons leave only two. At Long Life, a half combination within the ten-day period gives seven sons. Bathing gives a pair preserved in good health. Cap and Belt and Assuming Office give three sons. Flourishing gives five sons in a row; Decline two; Illness one. The passage repeats: count from self to Hai, with one in Illness. Infer accordingly without reconstructing a different table.
If the Eight Characters contain no child star and the hour is not in Birth or Flourishing, flourishing Officer/Killings cycles signify a child, but once the cycle passes there is none.
If Officer and Killings are present but cycles enter Hurting Officer, Food, Rest, Decline, Extinction or weakness, children are injured; only after that cycle passes do they survive.
One Killings means one son, two Killings two sons, no Killings no sons.
If self and Killings are balanced and Killings reaches flourishing territory, judge many sons. Also examine Wealth and increase or decrease by the hour, inferring the number. The author claims no failure.
Children's Charts
Much Wealth in a child's chart must mean birth to a secondary wife or adoption, and harm to parents. Early cycles reaching flourishing Wealth have the same meaning.
The source gives compressed birth descriptions: Jia, a sideways birth, an uneven crown and a covering birth membrane; Ding, an angled birth and a double crown; a dry birth with support, with restraint or punishment expected. Chen is described as fu-sheng, using the character for 'again,' then 'backing the father,' easy birth and easy rearing. Shen has a voice; Yin brings delay; Wei is favorable; Chen has an enclosing birth membrane; a face-up birth has fright. These abbreviated and sometimes obscure phrases are retained without supplying a modern obstetric diagnosis.
A child's chart chiefly needs strong self and especially welcomes Resource generating it. Without Wealth restraining Resource, birth is easy and disasters few. Officer, Seven Killings, Yang Blade and Hurting Officer should not be excessively strong: even strong self then has many disasters, while weak self is difficult to rear.
When a feared influence appears, cycles and the annual sovereign must not assist it.
Flourishing Wealth is greatly feared: if not born to a secondary wife, the child is adopted and harms parents. Early entry into cycles is also unwanted because the qi is difficult to withstand.
Example: Gengzi · Wuyin · Wuzi · Dingsi, born after the middle of the month. The month has Seven Killings, but Ding Fire serves as Resource. Yin is the Long Life place and can generate Wu Earth. Gengzi is unsuitable: Metal has Long Life at Si, and the Water of the two Zi is Wealth, restraining Ding Fire's Generating Qi while generating the month's Seven Killings. Killings restrains self; weak self cannot resist. The child therefore dies in the eleventh month of that year. This is generating Killings and damaging Resource.
Example: Guiyou · Guihai · Jichou · Yihai. Wealth is heavy in all Four Pillars, and at delivery mother and child nearly both die. Before a year or so has passed, the parents also die, and the child is adopted into another household. Infer the rest similarly; the author expresses no doubt.
Danger Gates and Harmful Influences in Children's Charts
For a child's chart, take the birth hour as master. First examine danger gates and harmful influences, then the pattern.
Strong day master with flourishing Wealth and Officer has danger gates but no harmful influence.
Weak day stem with little Wealth and Officer may be frequently ill but can be reared.
Weak day stem with much Wealth and Officer has both danger gates and harmful influences. A threefold combination gathering harm makes rearing difficult.
Without punishment or clash, the child has a loud voice, cries at night and has an impatient nature.
Wealth and Officer in the Eight Characters mean birth into a wealthy and distinguished household; Indirect Officer an ordinary household; Hurting Officer and Robber of Wealth a poor and lowly household. Indirect Officer, Indirect Resource and Indirect Wealth signify irregular birth or birth to a secondary wife, otherwise the third or fourth pregnancy.
In the Ziping method, Indirect Officer is the danger gate and Indirect Wealth the harmful influence. Judge by the generation numbers: Water one, Fire two, Wood three, Metal four and Earth five. A Jia day with Geng Killings meets the danger at four and nine years; Bing with Ren at one and six; Wu with Jia at three and eight; Geng with Bing at two and seven; Ren with Wu at five and ten. Yin stems follow the same method. The author claims no failure.
