General Rules for Women's Charts
Judging a woman's chart differs greatly from judging a man's. Master Ding, the jinshi of the Thatched Hall, composed what this text calls the original Shenqu Bafa, Eight Methods of the Spirit's Subtle Interest: Illumination, Reversal, Ghost, Concealment, Affiliation, Kind, Following and Transformation. The eight methods for women's charts are Purity, Harmony, Clarity, Distinction, Turbidity, Disorder, Prostitution and Sexual Impropriety. These are the historical text's categories and judgments.
Officer is husband and the fortune star. Flourishing Wealth generating Officer lets the husband receive fortune.
Resource Seal and Food Spirit give reputation, distinction and a recognized title.
Generating Qi and Resource make children difficult.
Resource, Wealth and Officer signify birth into a wealthy and distinguished family, with talent, beauty and virtue.
For a Jia day, Xin and You are the principal husband; Ding and Wu injure him.
Geng and Shen are a secondary husband. Repeated Geng-Shen and Xin-You signify harm to the husband and remarriage.
Too much Wealth and excessively strong Officer and Killings gather many visible and hidden husbands, described as promiscuity and excess.
Much Wealth is called sexually improper. The text therefore wants little Wealth in a woman's chart, to strengthen husband and benefit children.
Officer obtaining ground, Seven Killings injured, Food Spirit and stems flourishing, Resource and Heavenly and Lunar Virtues give an honored husband, distinguished children and imperial patents.
Hurting Officer with mixed Officer and Killings, Food Spirit and flourishing Wealth but declining self, makes a person jealous, harmful, lustful, greedy, fierce and unruly in the source's judgment.
Hurting Officer meeting Officer harms the husband and brings remarriage and toil of body and mind. Even without harm to husband, illness, little lifelong fortune and much unrest remain.
Hurting Officer in the year is especially forbidden, signifying childbirth difficulty and illness, otherwise shortened life.
Hurting Officer gives intelligence, beauty and refined qi.
Hurting Officer meeting Killings brings wealth; absence of Wealth brings poverty.
Robber and Defeating Wealth, with Hurting Officer and strong self, make a poor and low pattern.
The text calls the preceding fifteen patterns cases of clashing Officer and meeting combination, all with Hurting Officer's taboo. Even wealth and rank supposedly do not escape its accusation of sexual excess.
Only one Seven Killings or Direct Officer is good; many Killings mean many husbands.
Officer or Killings combined away means maidservants, concubines or sisters contend for authority.
Examples: Jia uses Xin as Officer and Bing combines with it; Yi uses Geng as Officer and sees Ding; Wu uses Yi as Officer and sees Xin. The text groups these as being taken by combination, although the examples differ in their stated relations. They signify unsettled marriage; infer the rest similarly.
Hurting Officer, Officer in Death or Extinction, Solitary Spirit, Widow Lodge, and Void at day and hour make a lonely, harmful chart.
Officer and Killings exposed in stems but absent from branches, in Rest, Imprisonment, Death, Extinction or receding qi, mean the husband's qi is cut off. Read this as the position of a secondary wife, maid or concubine.
Heavenly and Lunar Virtues in the chart remove childbirth and blood disasters and the attributed tendency to sexual excess.
The text wants weak self in a woman's chart, calling its nature pure and gentle, able to serve parents-in-law and assist the husband. Strong self is said to bully the husband, disrespect parents-in-law, stir disputes and be impatient. It then says weak self causes illness, and strong self does likewise. Both statements are retained.
Distinguished influences are favored; Traveling Horse and Salty Pool are unsuitable. Purity, harmony, gentleness and weakness are wanted, not excessive hardness and strength. Years and cycles are judged likewise.
Yin Error, Yang Error and Solitary Phoenix days are unfavorable for marriage. They signify no proper candle-lit wedding, marriage through relatives, replacement-wife marriage during mourning or changes and separation in marriage.
Solitary Phoenix verse:
Wood Tiger, widowed, has no husband;
Metal Pig—how could she have a spouse?
Red and Yellow Horse lie alone;
Black Rat guards an empty room.
The source applies this to widowhood for women and solitude for men.
Conjunctions and clashes in the hour make a husband and heirs difficult for a woman. Void and lonely restraint at hour and day make the result evident.
If Officer and Killings are entirely absent but Officer, Killings and Wealth cycles arrive, the husband star obtains ground, yet the text still calls the result lonely.
With Wealth and Officer both present, Hurting Officer and Robber cycles make the husband's palace difficult. Marriage comes only after the cycle passes. The author claims careful inference verifies this.
Verse:
Wealth, Officer and Resource are three things;
a woman's chart meeting them must strengthen husband.
Without excessive Killings or mixture,
strong self with control receives a title.
Verse:
A woman's Hurting Officer has no genuine fortune;
without Wealth or Resource, she keeps lonely poverty.
Hurting Officer exposed within the frame
must make her a servant at another's hall.
Verse:
A husband star with combination must remain principal;
combination without husband determines a secondary wife.
Repeated Officer and Killings make a low pattern;
repeated combination of Hurting Officer needs no further words.
Verse:
Officer carrying Peach Blossom gives fortune and long life;
Peach Blossom carrying Killings gives little auspiciousness.
Many combinations strictly forbid Peach Blossom;
Robber and Peer with Peach Blossom are greatly unfavorable.
Verse:
Hurting Officer is disliked in a woman's pattern;
Wealth and Resource make fortune firm.
Flourishing Hurting Officer harms the husband;
breaking Hurting Officer diminishes lifespan.
Verse:
Flying-to-Heaven Emolument and Horse, and Well-Rail Fork,
give poor fortune in a woman's chart.
The text allows only a secondary wife or prostitute;
Wealth is needed to enjoy glory and abundance.
Rhapsody on Yin Charts
When observing a yin chart, first examine the husband's flourishing or decline. Next, to discuss self's glory, see the children's strength or weakness.
An honored husband and flourishing children surely mean wealth, rank and glory.
Dead children and a declining husband mean only poverty, solitude and low status.
A woman with husband and children yet poor has self in declining territory.
A woman without husband or children yet prosperous has self in flourishing territory.
Few Noblemen mean that even without wealth there is prosperity.
Combining the noble influence means a prostitute or nun in this discussion of sexual impropriety and low status.
Hurting Officer in the Four Pillars secretly brings financial loss.
Taking a husband into one's household means husband is prominent in the household positions.
A secondary husband means husband flourishes at day and hour.
A declining husband with strong self signifies an upright person.
Flourishing Ghost and declining self must make a lonely, poor woman.
In all observation of the five phases in yin charts, distinguish these matters precisely. The favorable strong-self and declining-husband claims here are retained alongside the different general rules.
General Song for Judging Women's Charts
In choosing a wife, seek quiet composure;
listen as I explain in detail.
The husband master needs a strong palace;
the self master needs exceptional strength, as this song says.
If Officer does not combine,
the husband has no support.
Combine with Extinction, not with Nobleman;
few infer by this method.
Take the day alone as the year;
few transmit this method.
Emolument entering Birth and Flourishing
brings death in childbirth and others' censure.
Traveling Horse carrying Nobleman
eventually falls into the world of prostitution.
With Chen, do not see Xu;
with Xu, do not see Chen.
Chen and Xu meeting
are called sexual impropriety and low status.
With Killings, combination is not feared;
without Killings, combination is feared.
If combining influences are numerous,
if not a prostitute, then a singer.
One Nobleman position is proper;
two or three determine a favored secondary partner.
Yang Blade carrying Hurting Officer
makes mixed and complicated affairs.
Resource filling most of the chart
must determine injury to children.
The two Virtues seated on Direct Wealth
naturally bring wealth and distinction.
All Four Pillars in Rest and Imprisonment
give patent honors, fortune, Emolument and longevity, as the song reads.
Metal and Water meeting
must bring a beautiful appearance.
Complete Yin, Shen, Si and Hai
give solitude, sexual impropriety and a glib tongue.
Zi and Wu meeting Mao and You
surely mean running away with another.
Chen and Xu meeting Chou and Wei
are a great taboo of the prescribed way of women.
Two Noblemen and one Killings
are called wealth and rank in a powerful household.
Wealth and Officer hidden in a treasury:
when clash breaks it open, how could wealth fail?
One repeated heavenly-stem character
brings solitude, breakage and continuing calamity.
One repeated earthly-branch character
gives marriage on two occasions.
All forty-eight source verse lines are retained, including rules that differ from the general account.
Wealth, Rank, Poverty and Low Status in Women's Charts
To judge a woman's chart, first examine Officer. Officer carrying Killings gives poverty and low status; Officer obtaining the season gives ease and glory.
Excessive Hurting Officer must obstruct the husband and gives a forceful temperament.
Repeated Reversed Food diminishes fortune; how could Solitary Time be borne as well?
Heavy Killings requires going to a distinguished household.
Many combinations certainly damage the reputation for chastity.
Seated Emolument and Riding the Carriage give steadiness and abundance.
Clashing self and moving about give frivolity.
Rolling-wave Peach Blossom brings the source's accusation of elopement and indescribable shame.
Day Emolument returning to the hour gives distinction and others' respect.
Heavenly and Lunar Virtues seated on the natal chart, together with Resource, merit patents of two states.
Yang Blade at hour or day is originally harmful, injuring both the husband's palace and lifelong disposition.
Self's stem governs auspiciousness.
Strong Food Spirit in the hour requires examination of the Eight Characters' strength. Exclusive Food Spirit gives distinguished children; Indirect Resource stealing self's advantage is forbidden.
Proper quietness within the inner rooms must come from a yin day maintaining balance.
Waiting upon the husband to manage affairs is attributed here to a yang stem with an excessively flourishing hour.
In general, proper Emolument is welcome.
Salty Pool is feared.
Pure distinction obtains assistance from Long Life.
Mixture and turbidity return to defeated qi.
Much Defeat in the Four Pillars strongly forbids clashing self and entering combination.
A very busy life is described as that of either a prostitute or a nun.
Damaged Resource gives mutual jealousy with parents-in-law.
Exclusive Food Spirit suits offspring.
Repeated Officer and Killings call for guarding against sexual disorder.
Sisters exposed in the stems mean contention over the husband.
Kuigang has a capacity for ingenious change.
Day Noble has the fortune of settled normality.
Distinguish by stems and branches: strong Officer and Killings without control are classified by the source as prostitution or nunhood.
Rolling-Wave Peach Blossom
A woman's chart uses Officer, or Killings, as husband. Only one is favored; many harm the husband.
Officer filling the chart is forbidden; Killings filling the pillars is instead favorable and brings fortune.
Hurting Officer does not confer distinction; a further Hurting Officer cycle harms husband.
Hurting Officer controlled, self reaches Extinction: the compact statement is retained.
Hurting Officer in a woman's chart is said certainly to punish children and harm husband.
Many Officers injure husband and signify low status.
Hurting Officer with Peach Blossom is classified as prostitution, or harm to offspring.
One Nobleman, or the Glory Influence, or an Extinction place often gives wealth, rank and chastity.
Emolument and Horse following each other, Peach Blossom carrying Nobleman, or Salty Pool meeting Horse are called promiscuity, obstruction of husband and destruction of the household.
Chen without Xu gives solitude and a lonely old age.
Much Xu without Chen gives toil in youth and a good middle life, without obstructing husband or harming children, but with the source's accusation of romantic and sexual excess.
Chen and Xu both present are said to bring sexual disorder, household ruin, harm to husband and children, shortened life and disability.
